Introduction
In
many cases you might want to use text-based system utilities
instead of the graphic applications provided with Windows
systems. For example, if you are using a telnet session to
access your Windows NT/2000/XP server, beside those internal
commands like "dir", "copy", etc., you might need some tools
to conveniently access resources on your system, or
administrate your server.
Most
of the DOS era system utilities won't work on a Windows
NT/2000/XP system because Windows NT-alike systems restrict
direct access from an application to system resources.
Foxit
Software's WAC Toolkit is a collection of text-base
applications designed for Windows NT/2000/XP systems. These
applications are all text-based applications, or console
applications. They make use of a full console screen, and
support mouse operations.
Since
these applications are Windows applications, they support
advanced features provided by Windows, and run efficiently
without any additional support from the operating system.
Among
applications in WAC Toolkit, there are basically two
categories of tools; some are tools for normal users, and
others are tools for system administrators.
WAC
Toolkit is bundled in WAC Server, so if you are a WAC Server
customers, you automatically have WAC Toolkit, for free. But
even if you don't use WAC Server, you can purchase WAC
Toolkit separately, and all WAC Toolkit applications run
well without WAC Server, except for a few features requiring
WAC Server support, such as file transferring between WAC
Server and WAC Clients.
TOOLS FOR USERS
WAC
Toolkit includes the following tools for a normal user's
daily usage:
-
File Manager:
a full screen file manager that allows you to manage all
your files very conveniently. It can display the whole
directory tree, and allow you to explore the whole tree
using your mouse or keyboard. It also supports drag and
drop file operations.
-
Email Inbox:
a MAPI-compliant application that accesses your email
inbox. It allows you to check your email and compose or
reply to emails.
-
Text Editor:
a standard text editor designed for Windows systems.
Compared to the old DOS text editor, this one is much
more powerful and efficient.
-
Binary Editor:
allows you to view and edit files in their binary
format.
-
WAC Explorer:
an upcoming tool that will allow you to explore your
computer, as well as your network neighborhood, much
like the graphic Windows Explorer.
TOOLS FOR ADMINISTRATORS
-
User Manager:
allows you to manage all your users and user groups on
the server, including viewing the user or group list,
adding new users or groups, removing users or groups, or
updating user or group information.
-
Registry Editor:
allows you to view and modify the Windows system
registry from this full screen application much like the
graphic Windows registry editor.
-
Service Manager:
