The end of the book as we know it: eBook Reader eSlick

And then I found it: the eSlick from Foxit ! Nice basic design, just PDF and TXT and no adhesion contract included. I contacted the sales people, they answered within a few hours, very friendly and polite. After ordering, it took about 5 days for the reader to arrive, very fast. I can just say that I am more than satisfied with my eSlick. I read about three books on it by now and just love it!

Two ebook readers compared

I did get the FoxIt's eSlick first and I immediately liked it. What I liked most about eSlick was its display – very crisp and paper-like, with characters clearly rendered in a very print-like manner. It was a pleasure to read in any light and I did read a lot over those few days I had it.

Quick and Simple:  How I Like My eBooks

When I saw Foxit announcing the eSlick Reader, I made a note to pre-order one as soon as they were available.

I could buy a nice net book for less!

Here comes the eSlick.

The Positives
Hmmm, better pricing.  Over $100 cheaper than the Kindle for pre-orders.  Okay, let's see what this puppy does.

I just got my eslick yesterday.
After several hours of using, I would say it's definitely a worthy investment in reading PDF.
The eslick is slim, just right in your hands when you read.
The screen, though only available in 4 bits black and white, is contrasty enough for anywhere you get light around.
The "Fit to Content Width" option is great, making reading in landscape mode more comfortable.
Reflow generally works smoothly if there are less columns, graphs and forms in the PDF.
Sometime you have to press reset button after disconnecting from your PC. I don't know why.
The battery unit and connection works, but gives an appearance of cheap combination.
Anyway, a nice product you have made. Good jobs!
Now I'm interested in your next generation eslick products.

Very excited to get my Eslick. Open the box, and everything works great so far.
......
Thank you guys for the great product. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
By the way, I have a bunch of friends who have been asking me about the eslick ever since I pre-ordered it. I will definitely recommend eslick to them since I believe you will continously improve your products.

"…I just saw a review about the Foxit Eslick in another forum. The guy just got a new Eslick and attached many picures to show the display of different files, which really appealled to me. Now I'm pretty sure I'll get this one for my first e-ink reader, since I think it's better than the PRS 505 or other 6-inch devices in term of working with PDF......"

......The buttons were easy to learn and use. I have tried some other. Pictures such as front Bookcovers and illustration are display very well. I find that large books need to be created not just with pdf in mind but as some have already stated with the E-reader (Eslick) considered. The free books at websites (text and pdf) work fine as far as i can tell. The Fontsize, Landscape, and Reflow all work exceptionally well......
I am very satisfied with Eslick as a whole, It has brought some of the plaesure back to reading.

......And, it's good generally. It's easy to hold the eSlick in one hand and read. The display doesn't glisten, and reading can be done under natural light source.
Flipping a page make the operation indicator lighten a while, and if you do not flip frequently the eSlick may be on about one day. There's an option to select sleep mond, ranging from several minites, an hour, to never auto off.
Display is not as large as to fit a general paper. However, the display is easy to take a view scope of a document. And the eSlick lists acceptable file formats, and listed items can be one-click open or play. It does not list wide-character named files and non-ducument files such as executable.
Buttons and menus are enough for operations in need. There's a continue reading item in the menu, that it is for me to keep in mind the e-book I'm reading.
Battery performance is normal. It discharges when flipping a page or playing music, thus the eSlick provide reading all afternoon and night or listening songs about two hours......

Ok, I got my e-slick, have used it a little while and finally got a chance to take some pictures and a video of it.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the e-slick. It handles pdf's the way you'd like, making it easy to read them in the original formatting. It charges fast and holds it's charge for a long time when not in use. Interface is intuitive and very easy to use. I was pleased to see that resizing pdf's to fit the full screen worked very well.
All in all, a very sleek, well thought-out reading device. I'm very happy with my purchase and would gladly recommend this to anyone who wants to read their documents on the go.

I have mixed feelings about eSlick. I also own a Sony Reader PRS-505. Sony's product is far more complete and feature rich. But Sony reader does not handle PDFs properly. eSlick is complementing my Sony reader in PDF department.
I would also like to see support for HTML, CHM, DJVU, FB2 formats. eSlick displays PDFs beautifully. Please add support for more formats!......

At first I must say, it's a very nice reader with a good relation price and performance. It would be very nice, when you ship the eSlick to Germany (Europe), to have an power adapter included. I just take for charging an compatible charger.

Here is my feedback.
(1)Form factor
Totally excellent
-weight: this is a acceptable weight for daily use. Even kindle2 is a little bit too heavy for me.
-thickness: eSlick is thinnest ebook as far as my knowledge. Suitable for inside pocket of jackets
-button: cross bar is good because we could operate with thumb of right hand.
(2)Software
-reflow works well for Japanese. I expect reflow works for vertical writing which is common in Japanese books.
-I expect auto landscape works properly with your next firmware version.
(3)User interface
I think there is much room to improve especially for design aspect.
